Engagement rate
Engagement rate is the share of an audience that interacted with a post: reactions, comments, shares and saves, divided by a base such as reach, impressions or follower count. It measures whether content moved people, not just whether it was shown.
There is no single formula, and that is the trap. Engagement divided by followers flatters small accounts with dead followings; divided by reach it measures how compelling the content was to those who actually saw it; divided by impressions it punishes high-frequency distribution. Any of the three is fine, as long as you never compare numbers computed differently.
Benchmarks circulate widely and age badly, because platforms change what they show and to whom. A more reliable reference is your own median over the last months: it shares your audience, your niche and your formats.
Weight interactions by intent when you read the details: a save or a share usually signals more than a reaction, and a comment that asks a question is a person waiting for an answer, not a statistic.
